LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - MARCH 14: Beyoncé accepts the Best Rap Song award for 'Savage' onstage during the 63rd Annual GRAMMY Awards at Los Angeles Convention Center on March 14, 2021 in Los Angeles, California.

Beyoncé can now add “Oscar-nominated” onto her list of accolades as she lands her Academy Award nomination.

Beyoncé’s “Be Alive” from the soundtrack of King Richard is up for Best Original Song at the 2022 Oscars ceremony. This is the first time the 28 Grammy-winning singer has been nominated for an Academy Award.

The film depicts the life of superstar tennis star sisters Venus and Serena Williams and their father’s role in making them the best on and off the court. The song compliments that relationship and brings an uplifting message filled with ascending harmonies.

“It feels so good to be alive / Got all my family by my side / Couldn’t wipe this Black off if I tried / That’s why I lift my head with pride,” Beyoncé sings in the chorus.

Will Smith, who plays Richard Williams and is also up for the Best Actor Oscar nomination for his role in the film said that he was delighted when he heard Beyoncé wanted to be a part of the film.

“The marriage of a movie and a song is a kind of magic that’s unmatched in entertainment,” Smith told Entertainment Weekly. “I was so happy when Beyoncé called.”

Serena thanked Beyoncé via social media for her contribution to the film, “Im SO excited for you to watch the new trailer for #KingRichard, starring Will Smith and featuring the song “Be Alive” by Beyoncé 🖤Seeing this film (based on Venus’ and my true story) come to life has been one of the coolest experiences,” the tennis star said.

King Richard is also nominated for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress (Aunjanue Ellis), Original Screenplay, and Editing awards.

The 2022 Oscar ceremony will be on Sunday, March 27, 2022 and will be broadcast on ABC.
