Handcuffed Aiken Man Steals Police Car and Leads Authorities on Chase
A man who wound up stealing a police vehicle after he was handcuffed and arrested Monday morning in Aiken County faces multiple charges.
Police initially stopped Kevin Kirkland of Aiken on Richland Avenue and arrested him after finding drugs in his vehicle. Kirkland was handcuffed behind his back and placed in the back of the patrol car. “The subject gained access to the front of the patrol car and drove off,” according to a news release from the Aiken Department of Public Safety.
A high speed chase ensued, which finally ended when Kirkland lost control of the car on Glenwood Drive near Silver Bluff Road and crashed. The vehicle wound up on its side. Kirkland was taken to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries. He is facing charges of possession of methamphetamine with Intent to Distribute, Grand Larceny, and Failure to Stop for Blue Lights and Sirens. Authorities say more charges could be filed.
