Update: Lewiston Road and I-20 Interchange Work Postponed a Third Time
For the third time, the planned 90-Hour Road Closure and Detour of Lewiston Road/Horizon South Parkway at I-20 Exit 190 that was planned this week has been postponed again due to rain in the forecast this weekend.
The contractor for the Lewiston Road Widening Project, ER Snell, had planned the closure for February 8-12 to finalize work related to the Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) configuration conversion, but that’s been postponed now until February 22-26.
“While we know this is extremely frustrating for the traveling public who utilize this corridor regularly, the repeated postponements of this major interchange closure have been warranted due to forecasted weather being too cold and/or too wet to complete the required work,” said ER Snell, contractor for the project.
Starting at 12 pm (noon) on Thursday, February 22 and lasting through 6:00 am on Monday, February 26, weather permitting, the following will be closed:
- I-20 Exit 190 Interchange–There will be no traffic access between I-20 Exit 190 and Lewiston Road/Horizon South Parkway
- I-20 Exit 190 Overpass–There will be no traffic permitted across the Lewiston Road/Horizon South Parkway overpass over I-20
- Lewiston Road between I-20 West Ramp and William Few Parkway, there will be no through traffic permitted along this section of Lewiston Road
- Horizon South Parkway between I-20 East Ramp and Gateway Boulevard–there will be no through traffic permitted along this section of Horizon South Parkway
During the Closures, a Detour will be Posted for the Interchange Closure that will Utilize:
- I-20 Exit 183 Appling Harlem Highway (US 221/SR 47) to the West
- I-20 Exit 194 South Belair Road/Jimmie Dyess Parkway (SR 383) to the East
This closure is required to construct the remaining portions of the diverging diamond interchange (DDI) that cannot be done while traffic is crossing the bridge or using the ramps. This work includes realignments of lanes, pouring curb and gutter, pouring concrete islands, placing pavement markings, and reconfiguring, reprogramming, and testing of signal equipment. All of this work is required to place traffic in the new configuration.
Weather Depending:
It is expected that the ramps and through traffic reopen to vehicular traffic on Monday, February 26, 2024, by 6:00 am. At this time, new traffic patterns will be in place that follow the new DDI lane configurations.
