Will ‘Conclave’ Hit $100 Million at the Global Box Office Soon?
Conclave is a political thriller, based on the 2016 novel by Robert Harris. The film stars Ralph Fiennes, and it just won the BAFTA for Best Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing and Outstanding British Film. It follows Fiennes’ character Cardinal Thomas Lawrence as he organizes a conclave to elect the next pope. Soon he finds himself investigating the major candidates’ secrets, making him doubt his faith and the Roman Catholic Church.
Aside from Fiennes, the cast also includes Stanley Tucci as Cardinal Aldo Bellini, an American liberal, John Lithgow as Cardinal Joseph Tremblay, a Canadian moderate, Lucian Msamati as Cardinal Joshua Adeyemi, a popular Nigerian candidate with conservative social views and Isabella Rossellini (a first time Oscar nominee) as Sister Agnes, the cardinals’ head caterer and housekeeper.
Aside from receiving its latest accolades, Conclave might achieve another milestone soon: $100 million mark at the global box office.
Conclave’s Director Edward Berger: “This is Such a Personal Film for Me.”
In a statement released by director Edward Berger and published by Variety, he said, “This is such a personal film for me, so to hear how it has connected with and entertained so many movie lovers around the world makes me very happy. I am very grateful to our incredible partners releasing Conclave who have helped this film reach its utmost potential.”
FilmNation Entertainment, which produced the film, reported that the movie’s current gross is $98.5 million, with $66.3 million coming from international markets and $32.2 million from North America.
Fourth Oscars Best Picture Nominee to Cross the $100 Million Mark
When Conclave hit $100 million in global box office, it became the fourth Best Picture nominated film to do so, joining the ranks of A Complete Unknown, Wicked and Dune: Part Two. Winning the BAFTA and grossing almost $100 million doesn’t guarantee Conclave will win Best Picture. However, it does show it’s one of the most popular nominated films and might give it a chance.
Aside from being nominated for Best Picture, Conclave is also nominated for seven other awards at the Oscars, including Best Actor for Ralph Fiennes, Best Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Editing, Best Production Design, and Best Costume Design.
The 97th Academy Awards will take place on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre, Hollywood, Los Angeles. It will be broadcast live by ABC and available for streaming on Hulu.
