Kelly Clarkson’s “Kellyoke” covers are so good they sometimes sound better than the original. For Katy Perry, when she heard Clarkson’s cover of “Wide Awake,” she laid down her arms.
Clarkson, who is known for her powerful vocal chops, posted a new video on the Kelly Clarkson Show‘s Instagram covering the 2012 Perry hit in a slower way. Perry acknowledged Clarkson’s beautiful rendition and commented on the post, “Ok dang I can never sing that again.” One fan hilariously offered Perry their condolences: “so sorry my sister Katy. what’s done is done.” Calling it back to Clarkson’s American Idol days as a contestant, one fan wrote: “After ever cover, I think of how worth it was being grounded for 3 months for skyrocketing my family’s cellphone bill during American Idol.”
Katy Perry has been a judge on American Idol for seven seasons. Perry joined Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie as judges in 2018 for the revival of the show on ABC after it ran for 15 seasons on Fox. Clarkson was a contestant on the singing competition’s very first season in 2002. With judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson, Clarkson was just 20 years old when she won.

Following the Katy Perry cover, Clarkson covered “Beggin‘,” the Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons song made popular after Måneskin covered it on Eurovision in 2021. As one fan hilariously put it in the comments section, “So glad I’m not a singer. So I don’t have to worry about Kelly Clarkson covering one of my songs….” It seems as though Katy Perry isn’t the only one Clarkson’s covers that threatens to sound better than the original versions. Another fan wrote, “We need an album filled with these amazing covers ASAP.” (There is a Kellyoke EP of covers available.) A third fan stated: “There’s nobody in the world that has that cry in their voice like Kelly does. She is absolutely sublime [fire emoji].”
