Kevin Jonas is sharing his health struggles with fans. The Jonas Brothers member took to social media on Tuesday (June 11), revealing his skin cancer diagnosis.
Kevin Jonas Reveals Skin Cancer Diagnosis
In an Instagram video, Jonas, 36, shared a video with the caption: “Friendly reminder to get your moles checked [prayer hands emoji].” With captions written alongside the video, the “Waffle House” singer said, “So, today, I am getting a basal-cell carcinoma removed from my head.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, Basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer that mostly occurs by “long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight.” On white skin, basal cell carcinoma often looks like a bump that’s skin-colored or pink.
Zooming in on his forehead in the clip, the husband and father shows a small, pink mole. “Yes, that is [an] actual little skin cancer guy that just started to grow. And now, I have to get surgery to remove it. So, here we go.” The musician took the video while lying down on what seemed to be an operating table.
Though he censored where his mole was with an emoji post-surgery, the oldest Jonas brother appeared shocked by what he saw under the bandage he lifted. Continuing the video from the inside of his car, Kevin showed a smaller bandage covering where the cancerous mole once was and said, “Alright, I’m all done. Now, it’s time to heal. Heading home. Make sure to get those moles checked, people,” he suggests.
Fans flocked to the comments section to express their worry and relief following the procedure. One person wrote: “So happy you had this checked! [prayer hands emoji].” Another fan said: “Iâm glad you checked that mole in time. I love you and get well soon [red heart emoji].” A third fan commented: “You just scared us a bunch!!! Happy to know you’re recovering, i love you so much and wish you a lot of health!” Added another, “Oh Kevin, sending lots of love your way. So glad you were able to catch it so soon. Hope you recover fast [red heart emoji].”
Even the Skin Cancer Foundation gave their well-wishes, writing: “So sorry to hear about your BCC, Kevin. Thank you for raising awareness. Early detection is key. Wishing you the best on your recovery journey.” The Skin Cancer Foundation pinned an infographic about BCC, as we are quickly approaching summer and to provide the warning signs you should be aware of.
Kevin is returning as co-host alongside his youngest brother, Franklin Jonas, 23, in the third season of reality show Claim to Fame. The new season will premiere on July 10th on Hulu and ABC. Watch a clip from season two below:
