The travel experts at CN Traveler have released their annual Reader’s Choice tally of fantastic spots across the country. They actually tallied up 575,048 votes for their 37th annual Readers’ Choice Awards survey and say they were “struck by both your eagerness to embrace the new and your reverence for tried-and-true classics.” When it comes to their survey of small towns, they note that readers put together this roster of the 10 best small towns in America. “Whether you’re on the lookout for a cutting-edge arts scene, inventive new restaurants, or eye-catching architecture, you’re bound to find the next big new thing in travel,” they note.
So, what’s No. 1 on the tally? It’s Charleston, South Carolina Charleston, which readers say has a lot to offer when it comes to history, culture, food and charm. “While its robust food scene, which includes a steady annual circuit of nationally recognized food and culture festivals, continues to be a draw, visitors are rarely prepared for the city’s good looks,” they noted. “Stately homes, cobblestone streets, waterfront views, and an abundance of flowering window boxes only add to its welcoming vibe.” No. 2 is Santa Fe, New Mexico, which they call an “electric” and “historic” town.
As for the Georgia small town, Savannah made the cut, when readers saying the town is very Instagram-worthy. “Start with a walk along its cobblestoned historic district past horse-drawn carriages and ornate architecture, or find shade under live oak trees drooping with Spanish moss,” they note. Visit Savannah also boasts that it’s, “A sweet Southern sanctuary where art, architecture and ghost tales collide under a shroud of Spanish moss.” They add, “Consistently hailed as one of the ‘world’s friendliest cities,’ this coastal town exudes charm and grace.”
