Bradley Cooper Is ‘Not Sure’ He’d Be Alive If Not For His Daughter

Bradley Cooper says that becoming a father saved his life. In a new interview with Dax Shepard on his podcast, the Maestro actor-director-producer revealed, “I’m not sure I’d be alive if I wasn’t a dad.” Cooper, 49, and model Irina Shayk, 38, whom he dated from 2015 to 2019, welcomed their daughter, Lea, in March 2017. He expressed to Shepard how overwhelmed he felt at the time before the birth of their daughter. Realizing that having a child was going to "dictate everything you do from now on" and that his "DNA is going to tell you that there’s something more important than you." https://www.instagram.com/p/CN8AGITnXU-/ He admitted later in the interview that prior to his daughter's birth, he couldn't understand or relate when he'd hear other parents say things like, "I would die in a second for my kid." Even in Lea's first few months after being born, the award-winning actor wasn't sure if he "really" loved "the kid." However, he said all of a sudden, his perspective and feelings about Lea, almost seven years old, changed without questioning further. Cooper noted that being a father led him to want to work on himself to become the best version he could be because he wanted "to do the least amount of damage that I could do to my daughter." The Silver Linings Playbook actor has also been open about his past struggles with substance and previously said he feels “very lucky” to have since overcome them, and he is going on nearly 20 years sober. "I was so lost and I was addicted to cocaine," he said in 2022. He hopes that his daughter will "hopefully" learn from his mistakes and "help unburden her with any of my bulls---."
