These are the top news stories in the CSRA on Tuesday, February 15, 2022.

• Parking Deck at AU

  It’s no secret that finding a place to park is not an easy task for Augusta University students.

  The Georgia Board of Regents has approved moving forward with plans to build a $36 million parking deck on its Health Sciences campus downtown.

  The parking deck would have space for at least 1,350 vehicles.

  Construction is expected to begin in December.

• Deadly Motorcycle Accident Update

  More information has been released about a deadly motorcycle accident last week in Burke County.

  The victim was 16 year old Gavin James, who died in the wreck Thursday on Farmers Bridge Road.

  James was a student at Burke County High School.

  His death marked the fourth fatal motorcycle accident in the CSRA since the beginning of the month.

• Arrest Made in Murder Case in Aiken

  An arrest has been made in a murder in Aiken in early December.  Public Safety investigators say they’ve charged 18 year old Caleb Johnson of Aiken with murder in the December 3 shooting death of Thaj Nance-Parker at the McDonald’s on York Street.

  Officers arrived at the restaurant early that evening to find Nance-Parker with a gunshot wound.  He was rushed to the hospital where he died later.  Besides murder, Johnson is also charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

• Single Vehicle Accident Update

  Authorities have released the identity of the person killed in a single vehicle wreck Sunday night in Edgefield County.

  Twenty three year old Tyra Johnson of Saluda was a passenger in a truck that struck several trees on Highway 430 near Country Place Road.  She died at the scene.

  The driver, 21 year old Montreal Rynes of Edgefield, was not seriously hurt.

  The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

• Governor Brian Kemp's Mask Update

  Georgia Governor Brian Kemp’s plan to let parents opt their children out of school mask mandates would only run through June 30, 2023.

  The measure would say that school districts couldn’t require face coverings unless parents could opt their children out.

  Kemp made the move after GOP primary rival David Perdue attacked Kemp for not doing more to end masking in schools.
