Stanley Tucci Says His Wife’s ‘Undying Affection’ Help Him Beat Cancer
Stanley Tucci says he is “incredibly lucky” to be alive today, after being diagnosed with cancer five years ago. He credits his wife Felicity Blunt for helping him through one of the toughest times in his life.
Per People, The Devil Wears Prada actor, 61, was diagnosed with cancer at the base of his tongue back in 2017 and underwent a 35-day radiation treatment plus seven sessions of chemotherapy. These treatments ravaged his senses of taste and smell and left him unable to eat, making him dependent on a feeding tube. Before Tucci was accurately diagnosed with cancer, he spent two years living with extreme pain in his jaw, telling the publication, “I had a scan, but the scan missed it. And of course, when you think that there might be something wrong, you’re also afraid that there is something wrong.” The actor lost his first wife Kate to breast cancer in 2009.
After seeing different doctors, the Oscar nominee was eventually correctly diagnosed as having a 3-centimeter tumor at the base of his tongue. “They couldn’t do surgery because the tumor was so big,” he recalled. “It’s a miracle that it didn’t metastasize. It had been in me so long.”
Tucci said of his wife of ten years, “Felicity’s undying attention, affection and encouragement got me through it.”
A few months after his treatments ended in 2018, Tucci slowly began to regain his strength and ability to eat, which he said was “just the most exciting thing in the world” to him at the time. Despite some foods tasting “weird” and spicy dishes unbearably painful, the Taste: My Life Through Food author is back to living his foodie lifestyle , with the second season of his food and travel series Searching for Italy returning this spring.
