The Vegan and Vegetarian Food Scene is Growing With 2 New Restaurants To Explore In Augusta
Two new vegan restaurants, One29 Plant-Based Eatery and Nkwagala Cafe, are headed for Augusta.
The vegan and vegetarian community has grown over the years. You rarely go to a restaurant or even a fast food establishment that doesn’t have separate options for their vegan and vegetarian customers.
Even I, as a meat eater, enjoy vegan and vegetarian dishes from time to time.
One29 Plant-Based Eatery
One29 Plant-Based Eatery is an up-and-coming plant-based or “vegan” food business and ministry that offers healthier food options from many different cultural backgrounds. The name is based on the scripture “Genesis 1:29.”
They specialize in plant-based island-style dishes. Some items that you will find on their menu are curried tofu, stewed black beans, plantains, sauteed cabbage, and more.
I spoke with a representative of One29 who said all the items are a must-try!
“The favorite by far is the sautéed cabbage. The pepper “steak” is a close second.”
Catch them when you can! Currently, they serve their food by doing pop-ups, catering, and delivery. Their main pop-up spot is BaseOps Kitchen on 2430 Peach Orchard Rd. One29 is BaseOps Kitchen’s first full vegan caterer.
As they continue to grow, they will offer cooking classes, health education classes, and much more!
Nkwagala Cafe
This Alkaline Vegan restaurant will be located on South Belair Road. Their menu will consist of Nigerian, Ugandan, Mexican, Asian, and American cuisine.
Alkaline food consists of ingredients that have a pH level of 7+. It also refers to a diet rich in fruits, veggies, and whole foods that help balance our body’s pH levels. Eating alkaline can boost energy, support immune function, weight loss, high blood pressure, and even reduce inflammation.
While the actual restaurant is not open yet, they are open through Doordash. They are shooting to open May 14.
Their menu includes a variety of items.
For example, they have Mac Wings with Cucumbers, which is of course not actual wings but instead Battered Crispy Crunchy King Oyster Mushrooms fried in 100% Organic Oil of your choice.
Now, being able to choose the oil that your food is cooked in is certainly something new to me and could be a game changer for many people. With this selection, you get the choice to choose between grape seed oil or avocado oil.
They also have a vegan burrito, vegan bowl, vegan soups, and much more.
It’s already exciting to see new places come into the area, especially when they are very different from what is already here. That’s a major plus, or two, for the vegan and vegetarian community in the CSRA!
