Memorial Day weekend is quickly approaching. The weather has been warming up and the days are getting longer. Spring break has passed, but summer will be here soon. And if it’s been a while, chances are you’re thinking of or already planning a getaway or two in the upcoming months.

For Memorial Day, maybe you want to get out of town, but since you’re running out of time, you want somewhere close by that’s easy to get to. Whether you want somewhere you can just kick back and relax for the weekend or you’re looking for a weekend full of activity, there are many great spots to choose from. From beaches to historic cities, the options are limitless. But where are the best places for the long weekend?

Reader’s Digest has compiled a list of 27 of the best places to go for Memorial Day weekend. And despite the holiday weekend being so close, an expert at Priceline told RD that there’s still time to find travel deals. The data from Priceline shows prices for travel are down from last year.

Picking A Spot For A Memorial Day Weekend Getaway

Reader’s Digest took a look at data from various travel sites and experts to see which destinations were trending and where you might find the best deals. They also considered what type of getaway you might be considering… whether it’s a family vacation with fun stuff to do for the kids, a patriotic or history filled weekend, or simply an adults-only weekend.

There are so many great places to visit depending on your preference. And for some, you don’t even need to book a flight. In fact, of the 27 best places for a Memorial Day weekend getaway, two Georgia cities and two South Carolina cities made Reader’s Digest’s list.

Let’s take a look at the cities they chose!

  • Savannah, Georgia

Reader’s Digest deemed Savannah the best city for historic architecture. And with so many historic buildings and homes set among beautiful gardens and town squares, it’s definitely a great place for a weekend getaway. And it’s just a short drive from the Augusta area.

During Memorial Day Weekend, Savannah hosts a Memorial Day Parade past many of the city’s historic homes and they even have a waterfront fireworks display. There’s also great dining and arts to enjoy throughout the weekend. And if you’re like me, you might even book a Ghost Tour while you’re there!

  • Atlanta, Georgia

If you love jazz, Reader’s Digest suggests Atlanta as the best destination for your Memorial Day Weekend getaway. The Atlanta Jazz Festival will be happening, and it’s one of the largest free jazz festivals in the country. The festival takes place in Piedmont Park with multiple international acts taking the stage throughout the weekend. In addition, there will be many food and beverage vendors to keep you full and hydrated while you soak up great jazz.

Of course, there are other things to do in Atlanta too: the World Of Coke, the Georgia Aquarium, shows at various venues, multiple museums, tons of shopping and dining options, and more.

  • Charleston, South Carolina

Reader’s Digest listed Charleston as the best city for performing arts fans. But honestly, this city offers so much regardless of the time of year you choose to vacation there. There’s plenty of history to see, nearby beaches and rivers, great dining, and more.

Memorial Day Weekend is the kick off for the Spoleto Festival USA. This event brings two weeks filled with theater, opera, jazz, choral music performances, and more. Just about anywhere you turn, you’ll find performances, from historic theaters, churches, and outdoor spaces. The most popular acts can sell out, so if you plan to go, you’ll want to buy tickets in advance.

  • Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

And if you’re looking for a getaway that’s close by with something for the whole family, Reader’s Digest lists Myrtle Beach as the best for place for family-friendly activities. In fact, Booking.com has Myrtle Beach as the top trending destination for Memorial Day weekend due to all it has to offer.

Not only will you have the beach and beautiful scenery to enjoy, but there is also a wide variety of great dining options too. Also, Myrtle Beach hosts Military Appreciation Days to observe the city’s military history. During this time, they have various free events, including a parade, a brass band concert, and a family picnic.

For families, you can enjoy the beach, do some shopping, play mini golf, stroll the boardwalk, visit the zoo, and so much more.
